RETT SMITH RELEASES NEW SINGLE WITH JESSICA LEA MAYFIELD
“THE HOOK” OUT TODAY
RETT SMITH’S NEW ALBUM ‘WHAT THE WALLS CANNOT SEE’ OUT JUNE 2021
In advance of the release of his new album, Texas songwriter Rett Smith releases album single “The Hook”. A duet with Jessica Lea Mayfield, “The Hook” is out today as first listen from Rett’s upcoming album ‘What the Walls Cannot See’ produced by Jason Burt (Leon Bridges, Krungbin, Paul Cauthen, David Ramirez) and set for June 2021 release.
Americana roots with soaring slides and Rett and Jessica’s blended voices, “The Hook” showcases an evolution in songwriting for Rett who has long been a fan of Jessica’s music. After exchanging messages during quarantine, it turns out they are admirers of one another’s work, and when Rett asked Jessica to be on the track, she said yes. It was pretty much as beautifully simple and organic as that.
About the track, Rett says:
“The Hook” is a song about taking ownership within loss. An acknowledgment of one’s truth within the current landscape, and of no longer being able to distract and escape within societal norms. A song about what happens when turning the mirror on one’s past and recognizing all the work left to be done within, and to possibly come out of the other side a better person. Having Jessica lend her voice really brought the song to a beautiful place that I can’t wait to share.”

Rett Smith’s bluesy Americana sound is steeped in his West Texas roots. After spending the last few years living in New York and Nashville, he recently returned to the Lone Star State and settled in Austin. His new album ‘What the Walls Cannot See’ is out this summer (Imperial) as the follow up to his smoldering May 2020 LP ‘Giving Up On Quitting’.

MATT AND KIM RELEASE NEW TRACK
“YOU DON’T OWN ME” OUT TODAY
MATT AND KIM, the duo known for infectious, beat-driven songs and explosive live shows, are back with a new track, “You Don’t Own Me”, recorded and produced in their studio during quarantine. Originally recorded by Lesley Gore and produced by Quincy Jones, the group’s take on this boldly independent classic is out today, International Women’s Day (FADER Label).
Hear Matt and Kim “You Don’t Own Me” HERE
Talking about the track, Kim says, “This song has always resonated with me lyrically, ever since I was a kid. My dad raised me to not take shit from anyone and live the life I want to live. It breaks my heart when girls come up to me after a show and say, “It’s so cool to see a woman play drums, I kinda never thought I could!”. I tell them, “That’s fucked up! You can do whatever you want!”.
About the recording, Matt adds, “Over quarantine we were making a bunch of covers of songs we love. This one we feel came out particularly special. The song has such a badass message, especially for having come out in 1963, we think it can’t be repeated enough. And I love the way Kim sings it.”
While the pandemic has taken their often over-the-top live show off the road for the time being, Kim has been churning out original artwork in absolutely prolific proportions and they’ve been working on a ton of new songs. Matt and Kim are also working on the 2nd production of their custom 61-key Extra Deluxe midi controller.
